When Is It Time To Ditch My Pillow?

After a long day of work, the logical thing to do, is to go home and rest your head on your trusty, favourite pillow.

But like many people, have you had this pillow for years and just can’t seem to part with it?

That pillow unfortunately is full of bacteria, fungi, dust mites, dust mite faeces, thousands of pieces of your skin flakes, and probably all that drool you’ve oozed over the years.

The word dust mites, makes most people shiver. These tiny creatures add extra weight to your pillow and impair its ability to stay supportive long-term. Dust mites are not dangerous, but they feed on your skin and are simply unsettling to think about. But for people with allergies, dust mites can worsen their symptoms to the extent that they interfere with their sleep.

Alongside this, a pillow plays an integral role in supporting your neck whilst you sleep. Like your bed, your pillow should assist in making your spinal alignment straight. After all, you should sleep the same way you stand. If you feel your neck is arched to far forward or too far back, this means you are in need for a new pillow.

So when should I replace my pillow?…

The rule of thumb is to replace your pillow every 1 to 2 years. Certain types of pillows last longer than others, due to the quality and construction of their materials. We stock a range of different pillow materials including latex, memory foam and poly foam.

So how would I know if it’s time to replace my pillow?…

– If you’re experiencing neck or shoulder aches and pain
– If you see noticeable body stains
– You are finding it to hot to sleep
– You are tossing and turning to get comfortable
– If you are not having a reasonable sleep. due to neck and shoulder strain
– You are experiencing allergies
– You are continuously waking up with headaches
– If your pillow is to high/low for your profile

In order to ensure you reach your pillow’s maximum lifetime, you need to maintain it by using a pillow cover and cleaning it regularly.

At Beds for Backs we stock the most innovative pillow protectors by Protect-A-Bed, so you can sleep knowing that your pillow is protected from moderate spills, stains, dust mites, mould and bacteria allergens. It’s wood-based fibre is softer than silk, cooler than linen and more absorbent than cotton.

The great thing is, you can remove it and wash it, meaning you can sleep with confidence knowing those dust mites aren’t sleeping with you!
