Daylight Savings can really mess up our body clock. Read our tips below on how to get the most out of your extra hour!

Twice a year, we’re either robbed of our sleep or get a magic extra hour given to us by the gracious Gods of Daylight Savings.

These clock changes aim to make better use of sunlight during the winter and summer months. It sounds like a lot of effort, just for more sunshine, but the extra hour we get when entering wintertime can really impact the quality of our sleep.

What’s going on?

The time change can lead us to become out of sync with our current day-night cycle. This means our body and mind need to reset and get back into the routine it’s used to. As you’d expect, gaining an hour of sleep in Autumn is easier than losing an hour in Spring, however, any disturbance of sleep can make people restless at night and sleepier during the day!

Adjusting

Here are some simple tips to help you get on board the S.S. Daylight Savings…

Don’t go to bed late

We don’t want to sound like your mum, but don’t go to bed later just because you’ve gained an hour. Sticking to your normal routine will help you adjust to the time change. This is especially true for younger children. It’s still so important to get the recommended eight hours sleep, so if anything, go to bed early!

Stay Active

While an extra hour in the day means more opportunities for a midday siesta, doing so will only confuse your body clock even further. You’ll adjust much quicker if you stay awake the full day!

Eat Healthy Food

Again, we’re not your parents, but try to stay away from sugary foods as they can make your energy levels fluctuate. This means you’re going be groggy by midday! Eating healthier foods will help maintain energy levels throughout the day so you can enjoy a restful sleep at night. There are many different foods that you can incorporate into your diet to help you sleep better – take a look here.
