Why You Shouldn’t Make Your Bed In The Morning

Do you make your bed immediately after getting up? When you make your bed, you’re actually trapping millions of dust mites between the sheets.

Dust mites live in the humid environment between your bed sheets. Be sure to let your bed and sheets air out before making your bed in the morning.

Dust mites are opaque bugs. They’re microscopic, and they don’t bite. Dust mites make a home in your bed and feed off the dead skin cells, hair and sweat that you release during the night. They can also lead to asthma and allergy problems, which severely disturb your quality of sleep and impact your health.

Mites can only survive by taking in moisture from the atmosphere, using small glands on the outside of their bodies – so a warm, humid bed is the perfect environment for these little critters. It’s estimated that around 1.5 million dust mites live in the average bed, so it’s important to follow the two easy steps below to ensure it’s as mite-free as possible.

In order to get reduce the number of mites, their food source and habitual environment needs to be removed.

First, we recommend covering your mattress, doona and pillows with sheets and covers. You should also consider mattress and pillow protectors. A good mattress protector will prevent these pesky bugs and allergens from accumulating in your mattress. These should also be washed regularly in hot water to kill any bugs. .

Second, don’t make your bed straight away in the morning. Simply leaving your bed unmade during the day, or even just for a short time, can help remove the moisture and humidity from your sheets and mattress, so the mites will dehydrate and eventually die.

Removing any mites from your bed will help to protect you from a number of health issues and will allow you to enjoy better quality rest and sleep. If you do suffer from allergies, there are lots of ways you can manage and reduce symptoms – check out our earlier blog for more details!
