5 Tips to Look After Your Mattress

Everyone has a relationship with their own mattress. Whether you have a brand-new mattress or if you’ve inherited an old one, if you’re not going to look after it, what’s the point? Instead of just setting it up and forgetting about it, you should take care of it, as this can help it to last much longer.

A mattress won’t last forever, and experts recommend that you replace your mattress some time after the eight-year mark to ensure that you’re sleeping on a mattress that gives you the adequate support and comfort for better sleep. However, with some extra TLC, you can make your mattress last even longer.

Here are some ways you can do this…

1. Regularly Rotate

Just like a new pair of shoes, a mattress can take a while to ‘break in’. To get the best ongoing support out of your mattress, you should turn it every 3-6 months.

If you have a single-sided mattress, try spinning every three months. Grasp the mattress corners and spin it 180° clockwise until the mattress head is at the foot of the bed base.

To maintain the quality of your double-sided mattress, we suggest you alternate every 3-6 months between flipping and spinning your mattress. To flip, grasp the mattress corners and spin it 90° clockwise. The top and bottom of the mattress should overhang each side of the bed. Tip up the mattress onto its side and flip it over so the underside now faces up. Continue to spin it 180° clockwise until the mattress head is at the foot of the bed base.

Easy!

2. Use Protection

A bed can accumulate lots of different things such as dirt and stains, which reduce the life and hygiene if your mattress. A mattress protector will act as a barrier to help it last longer.

Mattresses and beds are a big investment. That’s why you need to make sure that they can last the distance.

A good mattress protector will stop food and drink spills, and body fluids from seeping into the mattress where they can be impossible to clean. Throughout a lifetime of use, this can make a huge difference to the condition, look and hygiene of your mattress.

3. Kick the Pets Off

We’re big advocates of pets, but not on your bed. Pets can transfer dirt onto the mattress as well as causing it unnecessary stress. Allergens such as pet hair can also be a problem for those with sensitive noses, so the more your pet sleeps on your bed, the more pet hair will be accumulated.

4. Vacuum

Many people don’t actually do this, but it can significantly improve the hygiene of your mattress. As you sleep on your mattress, dead skin and dust mites can gather, so we recommend you vacuum it every 2-3 months.

5. Don’t Sit on the Edge

We’re all guilty of this, but try sitting on a chair or stool rather than the edge of your bed. The edge of your bed isn’t made to support your whole weight and it can affect the quality of your mattress, leading to a much shorter life.

If you’ve just made the investment in a quality mattress, it makes sense to do everything you can to get the most out of it. By taking care of your bed, it’ll last longer and will lead to better quality sleep.
